It’s a new year, 2013, and with it comes optimism and hope for a terrific year.  A chance to turn over a new leaf or continue the momentum of 2012.  It depends on your outlook, your perspective.  I always look forward to a new year as a chance to reset and be positive about the unknown upcoming year.  I know that some years seem to turn out better then others, but at this time of the year, optimism seems to be at its highest.  So here’s wishing everyone a terrific New Year, filled with good health, good fortune and good times :)   Here are some local events and specials for this upcoming weekend:

Savannah King

Savannah King is an acoustic singer/songwriter from the Buffalo, NY area. She started playing guitar at the age of 13 when she found a small Goya behind her couch. From then on nothing could get a guitar from her hands. Since then, Savannah has also added the Mountain Dulcimer to her repertoire. She counts Joni Mitchell, Fiona Apple, Billie Holiday, and Ani Difranco among her many influences. In recent years, Savannah has performed in popular Buffalo venues such as Babeville, Nietzsche’s, and Merge as well as venues in San Diego, Nashville, NYC, and West Virginia. Savannah released her first album, Throwing Stones, in 2010. Her latest album, She Sends Her Love was released in May 2012. All the proceeds from She Sends Her Love go directly to the Music is Art charity in Buffalo, NY created by Robby Takac of The Goo Goo Dolls.

The Aurora Historical Society Invites You to “A Party for the President”

How lucky?  The 13th president turns 213 in 2013!  What better way to celebrate than with a night of political satire!  The Annual Aurora Historical Society fundraiser will assist with the expansion of the National Historic Landmark Millard Fillmore House Museum site in East Aurora.  As always, dinner will be followed by the hilarious political commentary of “Millard Fillmore” (aka East Aurora Advertiser Publisher Grant M. Hamilton), who makes his annual trek from Forest Lawn Cemetery to join us to present the Millard Mallard Award to the politician who made the biggest political blunder in 2012.  The president will be joined by a surprise singing “guest” brought to you by Town Historian Robert Lowell Goller.

Financial Friday…Adversity…Your path to Wealth and Prosperity

Adversity…Your path to Wealth and Prosperity

I am so grateful when I am able to share something of my own experience, knowing it will help others. Over the past several days my right ear has been congested–and I can’t think of anything more irritating than when I can’t hear. (well, maybe sneezing!) I knew that the root cause of this physical symptom was emotional and that no doctor or medication was going to be able to help me release the congestion. It was time to me to listen up, and hear not what was going on outside of me but rather, inside. Message received…“consider the uses of adversity”.

“Adversity: a condition marked by misfortune, calamity, or distress.” The antonym for adversity is prosperity.

When I began to consider the uses of adversity, the question I asked was, “what lessons am I to learn from this experience with adversity?” Sometimes, in order to unplug or decongest you must clear out the old in order to make room for clarity and awareness. In other words, adversity is a call to change or clear out, old perceptions…see things differently, in ways that will  bring you out of the dark and into the light.

Adversity can play itself out in many ways–for instance, financial struggle or misfortune, Hurricane Sandy, fear of scarcity (there won’t be enough), loss or slow down of business revenue, death or divorce…just to name a few. Tucked behind these events and feelings are significant life lessons…and whether we choose to see it or not, are all timely in our process for inner growth, leading to prosperity.

Perhaps you have to take on a second job as you continue to build your new business; or re-calculate your budget factoring in spending cutbacks (hint…doing this will open your eyes to an increase flow of money to you). Clearing out the old could also mean selling personal items that you no longer use, allowing them to re-circulate. In matters of divorce, speaking from my own experiences, it is the lessons in compassion and forgiveness that will liberate you.

Adversity creates the stage upon which you will see what is truly of “value” to you. In this very moment, what is most important to you? Hanging on to a “prized” possession or providing for your family? Exhibiting anger and blame in a courtroom or practicing the act of forgiveness so that you may begin to embrace the new life unfolding before you?

Adversity, if you allow it, will be your guide in transforming your life into one of abundance and wealth.

Annunciation School to Host St. Nicholas Craft Fair

Winter Festival to Feature Work of Roycroft Renaissance Artisans

The popular Western New York tradition known as the Roycroft Winter Festival, featuring the work of dozens of Roycroft Renaissance Artisans, will take place from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Dec. 1-2 in East Aurora Middle School, located at 430 Main St. For vendors and shoppers alike who return year after year, the Winter Festival marks the unofficial beginning of the holiday shopping season in the village.

Roycroft artisans displaying their work at the Winter Festival are members of the Roycrofters At Large Association (RALA). RALA is an association of juried artisans who create handcrafted work in many medias, including jewelry, wood, clay, book arts, metal, tile, glass, leather, pottery, sculpture, photography and more. Their work is known for its high quality and is identifiable by display of the “double R” mark, a symbol used exclusively by Roycroft artisans. Association membership is also available to those who want to be “Roycrofters at Large,” as membership is not limited only to artisans.

The Winter Festival will also feature food and holiday music, and admission is just $1 which will help fund future RALA community projects. Additionally, the traditional RALA “Goodie Box,” created by a Roycroft artisan and filled with handcrafted works of art from other RALA artisans, will be unveiled at the Winter Festival. Raffle tickets for the Goodie Box will be available, and the box will be awarded during the Roycroft Summer Festival in June.

Being Home for Thanksgiving vs. Shopping…

Now stores are opening on Thanksgiving Day.  I’ve got to be honest, I’ve never been a fan of being open on holidays.  That just means people have to work those days instead of being home and enjoying friend and family.  Now, I know for some maybe working is better then being home, but I’m willing to bet that those numbers are few.  I support businesses that support and value their employees by closing on holiday days and allowing them to enjoy the day.

Well. it’s happened.Some of the big box stores are opening ON Thanksgiving night to allow you the “convenience” of starting your holiday shopping rather than eating your Thanksgiving dinner. Ugh.
What is so important a purchase that one is willing to miss spending time with their loved ones?  Aren’t these purchases for the exact people you are leaving to grab those ‘door busters” for?  And what about the poor souls who are manning the registers and stocking the shelves? Turkey TV dinners for them?

I’m so glad to be part of a Main Street that still celebrates that hometown holiday- all be it Currier and Ives-esq-type of feeling. We still make stuff by hand, celebrate our fellow businesses, and rejoice that we are a unique sort of village.  I am proud to say that we remember that even though we are a business,we are a business created by, and for, people. People who have families and traditions that still  include simply spending time together. Not rushing things. Enjoying all that life has to offer, one day at a time.
So, you’ll see plenty of Christmas at Firefly but not until we’ve taken the time to reflect and say “thanks” with our loved ones.
